Ads Were Yesterday – This is the caption of Adblock Plus.
It could not be more true.
Today while downloading ScribeFire(will write about this later) to do blogging easily, I chanced to come across this feature in the Get Add-ons list. I installed this and it is amazing.(I might be late in knowing about this.)
After installing his add on to your Firefox, you just need to subscribe to a filter. These filters will be regularly updated and you need not bother about updating them. You can have your own customized filters.
I have given a few screen shots below of some of the sites I browse regularly. And when I opened, I was thrilled to find a clear and peaceful website, not obstructed by unnecessary ads.
However, I am going to turn it off as I do a lot of research on the ads and the way to use them effectively. This brings me to the most important part of this post.
We are increasingly seeing efforts from different developers to make web a ad free space. First came the much desired and extensively used Popup blocker. It was slowly incorporated by every browser. Now we have come across this add-on to Firefox(I am not sure it works on IE and other browsers or not. I use only Firefox, and IE only if the website is not supported on Firefox. I would not take the pain in checking that out. I would like the users to find for themselves.
). Adblock Plus blocks almost every ads on the websites. I believe very soon we would find it getting popular. (I am not sure if the other blogs will write about this as they are the ones who stand to lose.)
To all the startups and those working on their business model. Start looking for revenues beyond the ads. And no matter what happens, never and I repeat, never put ads from any ad networks in a start up website. I had given the reason for that here.
Also work on your design. Look at the screenshot of Rediff. It looks ugly.
Saying so, what is going to happen to the online ad industry. Will the CPC increase? Will the CPM be back coz, those who do not want ad are any ways blocking it? Or will this lead to CPA??
How are the ad networks going to fight this out? More so how are those all web 2.0 websites, whose entire revenue structure depends on ads be able to sustain. Is this the signal to think a model beyond ad?
